HoldFast Bay
Adelaide's premier seaside destination.
Renowned for its rich heritage, exciting events and attractions.
Desirable for it's quality lifestyle, strong environmental and cultural values.
Holdfast Bay is a progressive and lively seaside community.
The City of Holdfast Bay is located in metropolitan Adelaide, approximately 11 kilometres south-west of the Adelaide central business district. We are a compact city of just under 14 square kilometres, comprising the suburbs of Brighton, Glenelg, Glenelg East, Glenelg North, Glenelg South, Hove, Kingston Park, North Brighton, Seacliff, part of Seacliff Park, Somerton Park and South Brighton. Our City identifies strongly with the coast and includes over 8 kilometres of Adelaide's premier seaside, with no part of Holdfast Bay more than 2 kilometres from the foreshore. The particular aspects of a coastal environment, as well as regional recreation demand, significantly influence our services and programs.
Our City was home to the first European settlement on the South Australian mainland. It was in Glenelg that the Province of South Australia was proclaimed by John Hindmarsh on 28 December 1836. Prior to European settlement, the region was home to the Kaurna people of the Adelaide plains. In the early years of European settlement, Glenelg operated primarily as a fishing village and a summer retreat for the growing city of Adelaide.
At 30 June 2006, our City had a resident population of just under 35,000. Compared with the Adelaide metropolitan area, we have a higher proportion of residents aged 50 years or more (around 41% compared with 31% for metropolitan Adelaide) and a lower proportion aged under 11 years (10% compared with 15% for metropolitan Adelaide). The demographics of our City, combined with its popularity as a destination for recreation and retail activities, is a key indicator of what services are, and will be, required
It is Adelaide's most popular coastal region featuring:
Glenelg has a perfect Mediterranean climate characterized by warm dry summers and cool mild winters. Summer temperatures average around 27C and winter months around 15C.
A short 25 minute trip, on an original vintage 1929 tram departing from the centre of Glenelg - Moseley Square, takes you into Victoria Square in the heart of Adelaide. So you can base yourself at seaside Glenelg, but you are just a short trip away from the lights of the big city! But really why leave this delightful seaside resort when everything is at your fingertips.
So enjoy your stay at Glenelg, we know you will.
